Hembree – The Mercury Lounge
February 27, 2020 – New York

Hembree, one of NPR’s Spotlight Artists and Rolling Stone’s « Best Band We Saw at SXSW », released their debut album House On Fire in April 2019 on Nashville’s esteemed Thirty Tigers. Isaac Flynn, the band’s vocalist and primary songwriter, calls the songs on House on Fire « scrappy, » a production vibe that that matches the grit of the lyrics and stories he is telling. The songs retain a high production value but possess the toughness and authentic character of the region from which they were created. The first single, « Culture, » begins with a sonic storm of synth and drum beats while Flynn sings « the king of the culture is never really free » as a mantra. The song was influenced by sampling and Flynn points to the boundary-pushing production, rhythm, and pastiche of hip-hop as a strong influence on Hembree’s sound. The ten songs on Hembree’s debut reveal a band filled with the confidence that is required of those who sound self-assured while discussing themes of indecision and uncertain identity.

Established in Birmingham, AL, The Brook & The Bluff is a four-piece band that consists of front man Joseph Settine, drummer John Canada, guitarist Alec Bolton and bassist Fred Lankford. The Brook & The Bluff have quickly become recognized for their evocative blend of instrumental talent and vocal harmony. These elements are readily apparent in the band’s debut track, « Masks. » Having initially gained momentum via Spotify, the song has helped spur the band forward in their musical pursuits. The group’s first year as a full band was widely successful. From charting on Spotify’s US and Canada Viral 50 Playlists, performing at the NAMM shows in both Nashville and Anaheim, and selling out shows in Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, Nashville, Auburn and more, the band has had an exhilarating start. Originally an acoustic duo, Alec and Joseph started turning heads in local venues with clean vocals and expert guitar work. John and Fred noticed the talent and potential of the duo and joined the group, expanding their sound with driving rhythm and four-part harmonies. Big Head Todd and the Monsters Ft. Hazel Miller, 10,000 Maniacs – Capitol Theatre
February 28, 2020 – Port Chester

Big Head Todd and the Monsters are not that big on anniversaries, so there won’t be any big hoopla over the fact that the band is officially crossing the three-decade mark this year. Thirty years would seem like something to commemorate, especially with the same core lineup, an achievement few other name-brand bands can boast of. Yet right now they’re less about celebrating stability than volatility, in the form of their eleventh studio album, New World Arisin’, which makes good on its forward-facing title with what might be the brashest rock and roll of their career. The old world can’t rest on any laurels, and neither will they.

The Bones of J.R. Jones – The Mercury Lounge
February 29, 2020 – New York

When Jonathon Robert Linaberry needs a break from city life, he goes Upstate, near the Catskills, to renovate a little farmhouse he purchased a couple of years back. As he pours himself into his work, J.R. doesn’t think about texts, email, or even his music, which he performs solo under the moniker The Bones Of J.R. Jones. His only focus is the house. « That’s been an amazing emotional outlet for me, » he says of his periodic retreats. « To kind of sustain myself after coming from the road and getting back into the grind of the city, to have this, for lack of a better term, Shangri-La. » In a sense, recording and touring as The Bones Of J.R. Jones is its own form of isolation. But you wouldn’t immediately think so: As a one-man band, J.R.’s project, which fuses a moody blend of soul, blues, roots, and Americana, sounds enormous both on record and live in concert. That’s because J.R. playsand has grown accustomed to playingevery instrument by himself. He’s happy to report, though, that he’s a lot less solitary on his third full-length album, Ones To Keep Close. In addition to workshopping the 11-track album with producer and good friend Rob Niederpruem at Hyperballad Music in Brooklyn… (Lire la suite)

Ancient Law Film, New Live Score by A. Svigals & D. Sosin – Ashokan Center
February 29, 2020 – Olivebridge

The Ancient Law (Das Alte Gesetz) a cine-concert: a screening of the foundational 1923 silent film, with a live original score by Alicia and pianist/composer and silent film music legend Donald Sosin. The Ancient Law is a landmark in Weimar cinema and an outstanding example of the creative contribution of Jewish filmmakers in 1920s Germany. It is the story of a rabbi’s son who leaves his shtetl home in Galicia and makes his way to Vienna, where an archduchess at the imperial court falls in love with him. . The movie draws a complex portrait of the tension between tradition and modernity. The discovery of the censor’s certificate with the text of the original intertitles was the impetus for this new restoration of The Ancient Law, available through Flicker Alley films.
